圖朸厙 comment on government response to teacher training consultation

圖朸厙 has welcomed the news that the government has scrapped plans to stop awarding Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at the end of initial teacher training courses.
The union was responding to the government response to the consultation on , which also sets out plans to expand continuing professional development opportunities for teachers.
圖朸厙 said higher education had a critical role to play in educating teachers throughout their careers, and that it would continue to engage with the government as the proposals are developed.
圖朸厙 general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: '圖朸厙 had raised serious concerns about the potential impact of changing how QTS is awarded, both on teacher recruitment and teacher educators in higher education. It is encouraging that the government has listened to these concerns and scrapped this damaging proposal.
'Plans to expand professional development opportunities for teachers are also welcome. Higher education has a central role to play in providing high-quality education and support for teachers throughout their careers. We will continue to engage with the government as is develops proposals in this area.'
