The joint trade unions formally presented their claim which contained: A claim for a 1 per hour increase A claim for the Living Wage A code of practice for dealing with workload A review of the annual implementation date The full text of the claim can be found at HYPERLINK "http://www.ucu.org.uk/fepayengland" www.ucu.org.uk/fepayengland The unions acknowledged the Association of Colleges (AoC) support for the joint funding campaign and in particular the petition and also acknowledged the support from individual colleges for the campaign. The need to maintain a united voice to defend the funding of lifelong learning under the new government was a point agreed upon by both sides. representatives made the strong point that campaigning for pay and defending jobs are both part of the one same campaign for the proper funding of FE. The AoC themselves have said that if the funding cuts continue there will be no adult further education by 2020. The AoC representatives also welcomed the joint work done on the funding campaign in the run up to the general election and shared the unions belief that it was necessary that this joint work continue. However AoC representatives explained the impact of the funding cuts and increases in pension and national insurance contributions on college finances. In relation to the workload element of the joint trade unions claim the AoC did not think that a code of practice was the best way to deal with workloads in the sector but wished to pursue further talks at officer level to address workload concerns in the sector. Of the AoC members who participated in their pay survey, 68% of colleges stated that they continue to use the 1 August implementation date and did not have an appetite for change. However the AoC is prepared to further explore alternative implementation dates with the trade unions at officer level. The AoC offered to provide joint correspondence with the trade unions to the government to outline the challenges facing the FE workforce and to continue to work with other sector stake holders as a partner in the adult funding cuts campaign. At the close of the talks the AoC representatives indicated that they did not have a clear mandate from to provide a general uplift on pay however they were committed to the national talks and following further consultations with their members anticipated they would be able to provide a clear position at the next meeting on 10 June.
